Room 4 - Storage Vats

Storage Vats

These wooden stroage vats were the forerunners of the metal and plastic tanks now used at the sugarhouse. Since they would dry out between sugaring seasons, they had to be soaked to expand and seal the cracks between the boards. This huge vat extends through the wall. If you climb the stairs you will see a large hole gnawed by a hungry porcupine.
